V.A. - Love, Peace & Poetry: Chilean Psychedelic Music

Love, Peace & Poetry: Chilean Psychedelic Music
Various Artists
LP
QDK 049

[Artist] - [Song Title]

1. Kissing Spell - Yellow Moon
2. Los Jaivas - Foto de la Primera Comunión
3. Los Vidrios Quebrados - La Primavera de Miss L.O'B.
4. Aguaturbia - Erótica
5. Blops - Los Momentos
6. Sacros - La Realidad
7. Los Mac's - La Muerte de Mi Hermano
8. Blops - Pisándose la Cola
9 (B1). Embrujo - Canto sin Nombre
10. Los Beat 4 - Pobre Gato
11. Aguaturbia - I Wonder Who
12. Tumulto - Tu, Yo y Nuestro Amor
13. Blops - Pirómano
14. Escombros - Magnetism
15. Los Beat 4 - Civilización
16. Congregación - Cuantos que no Tienen y Merecen
17. El Congreso - Así Serás

"Chilean Psychedelic Music" — pretty nicely descriptive, I would think. It sounded better to me the first time compared to last night, but there are some good moments on here. "Foto de Primera Comunión" is strangely hypnotic to me, and "La Muerte de Mi Hermano" is a right-good protest song from a tumultuous Chile in the late Sixties and early Seventies. "Pirómano" sounded pretty cool to these ears, Aguaturbia is sure to delight proper-minded people everywhere, and "Magnetism" is a most curious-sounding record, sort of a "25 or 6 to 4" gone horribly haywire. I still have only heard a little bit of the Love, Peace & Poetry series, but it's not let me down yet.

Leo Kottke / Mike Gordon - Sixty Six Steps

Leo Kottke / Mike Gordon
Sixty Six Steps
Compact Disc
RCA Victor 82876 68909-2 RE1

1. Living in the Country
2. The Grid
3. Oh Well
4. Rings
5. Cherry County
6. Sweet Emotion
7. The Stolen Quiet
8. Balloon
9. Over the Dam
10. Can't Hang
11. From Spink to Correctionville
12. Ya Mar
13. Twice
14. Invisible

Compared to clone (2002), this one, to my ears, sounds more musically cohesive....more melodic. Kottke's guitar, Gordon's bass, and all the other instruments that appear here, seem to be in a strange harmony here. Amid some covers (Aerosmith!) and remakes of Kottke originals, the collaboration works.

I don't know much about Mike Gordon. I think he was with Phish.

I am, however, well-acquainted with Leo Kottke...matter of fact, I saw him perform here at one of the local venues...and I can tell you, long-time fans of Leo shan't be disappointed by this. This is drenched in his musical style and, indeed, his offbeat sense of humor. ("The Collins Missile" is a love song.)

Lest someone here isn't familiar with Leo Kottke, he's summarily a twelve-string wizard and wholly unique. He's one of those that you've just got to listen to to really get the idea....

And since I wrote this review, I've come to understand that Gordon's style on the bass just happens to be the perfect companion to Leo's twelve-string. Which I do quite understand upon listening.

Bob Weir and Ratdog - Evening Moods

Bob Weir and Ratdog
Evening Moods
Compact Disc
GDCD 4072

1. Bury Me Standing
2. Lucky Enough
3. Odessa
4. Ashes and Glass
5. Welcome to the World
6. Two Djinn
7. Corrina
8. October Queen
9. The Deep End
10. Even So

Ratdog's brand of jam-rock translates......pretty well to the studio format. It seems like the album kind of drifts after a while, but there are some groovy tracks here, among them "Lucky Enough" (closer to pop than most of the album), "Two Djinn", and the tender "Welcome to the World". I played this at work, where a coworker likened Bobby's voice to that of Terry Callier (whom I don't know, but maybe you, the reader, are familiar with him; AMG describes him as kind of R&B/jazz).

1. Teddy Robin & the Playboys - Magic Colours
2. Erkin Koray - Istemem

11. Mogollar - Katip Arzvhalim Yaz Yare Böyle
12. Confusions - Voice From the Inner Soul
13. The Quest - 26 Miles
14. Jung Hyun and the Men - Korean Titel A2

This is the third installment in the Love, Peace & Poetry series, each installment of which focuses on a different part of the world. I've only heard two of the installments so far, including this one, but they're both so full of wonderfully unique, exotic, psychedelic sounds that I simply cannot help but hunger for the others. This particular installment looks at Asia, from Türkiye ("Turkey") to Japan (and other stops, of course). My personal picks after two listens are "It Was Probably Late Summer," "You Know What I Mean," "26 Miles" and the final, nearly-ten-minute track by Jung Hyun and the Men, the actual title of which had not yet been translated to English at the time of this LP's release. I still have no idea what to think of the Cambodian Rocks cut.......

Group 1850 - The Great Single Tracks

Group 1850
The Great Single Tracks
Compact Disc
MRCD 005

1. Zero
2. Frozen Mind
3. Don't Let it Be
4. Sun is Coming
5. We Love Life
6. Little Fly
7. I Know
8. I Want More
9. Mother No-Head
10. Ever,Ever Green
11. Have You Ever Heard
12. Fire
13. Look Around

Much, much better than I remember it sounding the last time I played it. Kind of a heavy prog-psych record. I gotta wonder, though, what I was thinking getting a CD that is so obviously non-legit; the cover is a flimsy piece of paper with no back or any information; the CD itself lists the title as "Complete Singles Collection" (and spells the band's name the Dutch way); the spine reads, in its entirety, "Group 1850, The greate single tracks ", and there's no sign of any source at all being involved in the production of this thing (except for the "MRCD 005" on the actual disc). Suppose I can Google "MRCD".... (a few minutes later) ....nothing. At least they provided a track list on the back. Along with this picture (photographed by me and shrunk to fit here):

Pink Floyd - A Momentary Lapse of Reason

Pink Floyd
A Momentary Lapse of Reason
Compact Disc
Columbia 68518

1. Signs of Life
2. Learning to Fly
3. The Dogs of War
4. One Slip
5. On the Turning Away
6. Yet Another Movie / Round and Around
7. A New Machine (part one)
8. Terminal Frost
9. A New Machine (part two)
10. Sorrow

This seems to me to generally not be all that appreciated. I think that it is perhaps another victim of people's tendencies to compare albums to other albums that bear the same artist name. I happen to think this album is a fine piece of spaced-out rock. I suppose the mid-to-late-Eighties production on this thing can be a bit of a turn-off at times; nevertheless, I think this album does carry a certain, spooky, far-out vibe about it that is especially amplified on days when the weather leaves something to be desired. Try it....some dark afternoon....
